Workshop on AI Applications in Translation Attracts Strong Interest from Faculty of Foreign Languages Lecturers and Students

On the morning of January 13, 2026, at Room A403, the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) successfully held a workshop titled “An Overview of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using AI in Translation.” The event was part of the Faculty’s key academic activities for the 2025–2026 academic year and welcomed nearly 200 lecturers and students.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape higher education worldwide, the workshop offered a timely opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, update professional knowledge, and gain practical insights into the use of AI in translation. This rapidly developing technology is having a significant influence on both translator training and professional practice, making the topic highly relevant to lecturers and students alike.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Pham Phu Quynh Na, who is currently working at Multicultural Health Communication Services under the New South Wales Department of Health (NSW Health, Australia) as a Translation Project Coordinator and Health Project Manager. She is also a NAATI-certified translator, with over 26 years of experience in language teaching as well as translation and interpreting.

During her presentation, Dr. Pham Phu Quynh Na provided an accessible overview of how AI is being used in translation today. She highlighted key benefits such as fast processing speed and the ability to handle large volumes of text, while also pointing out important limitations, particularly in conveying meaning, cultural nuances, and professional accountability. She emphasized that human translators remain essential and encouraged participants to view AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for professional expertise.

In the face of rapid technological change, understanding both the strengths and weaknesses of AI helps students better prepare for future careers and develop a more realistic view of the translation job market. The workshop also reflected the Faculty of Foreign Languages’ ongoing commitment to integrating current professional issues into academic activities and strengthening the connection between training and real-world practice. Through events like this, students are better equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities that technology brings to their future careers.
